National Assembly Removes Direct Primaries Clause from Amended Electoral Bill

On Wednesday, both Chambers of the National Assembly reconsidered their earlier stand to override Mr. President’s veto to pass the electoral acts amendment Bill into Law after removing the controversial clause of only Direct Primaries for political parties nomination, but included Indirect Primaries and While the Senate adopted Consensus, the House of Representatives was silent on the issue.

 

Also, The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly over the week suspended with immediate effect, the Chairman of Mkpat Enin Local Government Council, Hon. Aniekpon Ekpo, over alleged gross misconduct and misappropriation of funds and directed the Vice Chairman of the Council, Hon. Mercy Bassey, to take over from the suspended Chairman in an acting capacity, pending the conclusion of an investigation into the matter.

 

The Legislature today with Sixtus Tom today, focused on the above, analyzing whether or not, the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly had the lawful power to suspend a democratically elected Chairman of a local government
